Carbon footprint is the formal terminology used to describe how we impact the environment, whether residences and/or businesses. It is the "measure of the impact that human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted, produced, and measured in units of carbon dioxide. For example, for the period of one year, all possible causes of carbon are accounted for and measured by using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) calculator. From manufacturing, transportation, advertising and packaging, each product you purchase has its own carbon footprint.
A way to lower your carbon footprint is to purchase electricity generated by wind turbines, solar panels, hydroelectric or nuclear plants. Your local electric company should have information to assist in determining how best to participate in their programs for carbon footprint reduction.
